What Is Betrayal Trauma?

Betrayal trauma occurs when someone we depend on for safety, security, or survival violates our trust in a fundamental way. Unlike general relationship difficulties, betrayal trauma activates a survival-level response — affecting how you sleep, think, work, and connect with others. It's not simply being hurt or disappointed. It is a psychological injury.

Common sources include the discovery of a partner's infidelity, hidden pornography use, secret financial deception, or other forms of relational betrayal. If you're experiencing hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts, emotional numbness, or an inability to trust your own perceptions — you may be living with betrayal trauma.

You are not overreacting. What you are feeling has a name.
